It is a common assertion that art, to be good art, must be beautiful. Yet some pieces of recognized art are explicitly and intentionally grotesque (see Flannery O’Conner’s novels, Poe’s poetry, etc.). It is argued that there is a unique artistic communication that can happen through these. Must our standards be changed, or must these generally recognized art pieces be no longer considered art?
